Vallot Auctioneers is proud to present a collection of jackets and wall hangings by the legendary fabric artist, photographer, and designer, Bill Bowers (b. 1947). Known for his use of collage and free-sewn fabric, Bowers has been designing jackets and making art since 1969. He began his career in San Francisco, while living and performing with the famous drag theater troupe, the Cockettes.
While designing costuming for the Cockettes, Bowers further made a name for himself in the fashion and music industry, creating unique jackets for rock-and-roll icons like the Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, and Aerosmith. His designs were an immediate hit, earning him press in Rolling Stone magazine, as well as a 1973 feature in Vogue Italy, shot in Andy Warhol’s silver factory. Eventually, Bowers would extend his work from fashion design to other fiber arts such as wall hangings and collages.
Lot 51 in AFTER DARK/WINTER 2026. Custom crafted jacket featuring magazine clippings and additional collage art by Oscar Zamora Graves (American, b. 1992).
Working from deconstructed Levi’s denim jackets, Bowers stitches everything by hand, and employs a wide range of materials from magazine clippings to vivid swatches of vinyl and fabric. In the three “beefcake” jackets presented in our upcoming AFTER DARK auction, Bowers adorned photos and clippings from physique magazines with elaborate bead and applique frames. Featuring works from the pioneers of gay erotic art such as Tom of Finland and Spartacus, his jackets are both fashion pieces emblematic of his “Funk & Flash” design philosophy, as well as unique tapestries of queer art and narratives.
Lot 51 in AFTER DARK/WINTER 2026. Wall hanging, featuring prints by George Quaintance (American, 1902–1957) and “Spartacus” aka Dimitri Holmes (American, 20th century).
As seen in this exceptional wall hanging, Bowers also has a keen interest in using beadwork to frame his cut-outs, which he developed while working with the acclaimed New York artist Ken Tisa. However, Bowers is not only framing the art that he includes; he is also applying layers of colour and additional illustration to them. This wall hanging, featuring works by George Quaintance and Spartacus, showcases the way in which Bowers further applies his own hand to the material, creating layers of queer history and artistic practice.
