WHY PHYSIQUE PHOTOGRAPHY IS IMPORTANT.

Barry Harrison, the founder of homobilia.com, discusses the history and significance of collecting queer works of art and ephemera, with particular attention to his own area of expertise, Physique Photography.

An early adopter of the internet as a platform to display and share art, Barry Harrison has spent nearly 30 years as an online retailer, curator and collector of queer art. This month, he sat down with assistant auctioneer Gwen Morris , to discuss his collectorship and the importance of Physique Photography, its connections to the history of the medium, and the enduring qualities that make physical media worth protecting. Watch him share his expert insight into one of the foundational touchstones of early gay communities in the mid 20th century, and learn how physical media brought a nation of gay men together through art.

You can hear more of Barry Harrison’s thoughts in our upcoming auction AFTER DARK/SUMMER where he discusses lot 35, a Bruce of Los Angeles estate photograph, offered at the middle of our catalog.
