This Thursday’s AFTER DARK auction will feature an exemplary array of works by the American artist Mark Beard. Skilled in all mediums, from painting and drawing to bronze and ceramic work, Beard is an artist that operates under a large roster of artistic aliases, or more accurately, personas. Each of these personas are placed within their own aesthetic genre and faux-historical context, ranging from the early 20th century English painter Bruce Sargeant to the New York Postmodernist Peter Coulter. The artist seamlessly transitions between these different identities, which he uses to exemplify a particular gay vision of history that has often been reduced within the art historical canon.
Lot 3: Mark Beard (American, b. 1956). Untitled (Abercrombie & Fitch Models), ca. 2004. Oil on canvas. Estimated at $3,000 - $5,000.
As Bruce Sargeant, the artist would embrace the prep-athleticism of the young men of the 1920s. Sargeant’s models are wrestlers, rowers, and tennis players, men of pedigree that are keenly aware of their athletic figures. His paintings depict the fleeting beauty of these men at their prime, shortly preceding the tragedies of the second world war. The moment that Sargeant’s work captures is often likened to the subtextual homoeroticism of John Knowles’ A Separate Peace (1959). This same tragic sensibility would be presented in Sargeant’s own which notes his tragic early death in a sporting accident.
Mark Beard’s murals and sculptures as Bruce Sargeant would later grace the principal stores of Abercrombie & Fitch, which embraced a particular masculine and homosocial aesthetic from the 1990s-2000s. The two paintings in our upcoming AFTER DARK auction are both representative examples of this work, with his Gymnast painting later being incorporated into a mural in the New York Flagship Store.
Lot 10: Mark Beard (American, b. 1956). Male Nude Seated with Arms Crossed and Male Nude Leaning on Elbow: A Double-Sided Work (MB 003F), 2005. Charcoal and conté crayon on paper. Estimated at $1,200 - $1,800.
Mark Beard’s work is now widely celebrated, both for its exceptional conveyance of the male form, and for the way that it challenges and subverts the art historical narrative. His paintings, sculptures, and assemblages can now be found in the permanent collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, MoMA, the Whitney Museum of Art, the Boston Museum of Fine Arts, and many other notable institutions and museums.
